How to Get Rid of Algae from a Dam

Follow the below steps for the greatest chance of eradicating algae from your dam for good

We recommend you follow Steps 1 and 2, and wait 6-8 weeks for results.

These methods are 100% natural and tackle the cause of the algae, not just the symptom. Aka, the solutions help to eradicate algae from your dam, not just this season, but for the seasons to come.

Step 1

Increase aeration

Aeration means adding oxygen to your water. This provides ideal conditions for “good” aerobic bacteria to grow in number. These “good” guys reduce nutrients in your dam, e.g. nitrogen and phosphorus, and eat sludge on the floor which is fertiliser for algae. With enough “good” bacteria reducing nutrients in your dam, algae eventually starve to death. Keep adequate aeration up and algae have a very difficult time returning—there simply isn't enough food. These bacteria clean up dead algae too. Without them, decaying algae will rot and sink to the floor, becoming fertiliser for next season's algae.

Eradicating blue-green algae and aquatic weeds in 6 weeks with a surface aerator

Watch video

Avalon Nursery near Ballarat was having a problem with blue-green algae and red azolla in one of their irrigation dams.

We recommended installing a 1.5hp solar-powered Air-O-Lator Carnival Aerating Fountain. Within days of installing the aerator, the blue-green algae and weeds began to retreatAfter just 6 weeks, the algae and weeds were completely gone. The smell had disappeared too.

Step 2

Add Biostim probiotics

Biostim is a probiotic that feeds the “good” bacteria in your dam, growing their populations. As mentioned above, these guys consume nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus and eat the sludge on the floor of your dam. Eventually they create (nutrient-depleted) conditions that make it impossible for algae to grow, no matter how much sunshine your dam receives.

Algae Reduced by 98% in 11 Weeks Using Biostim

We ran a 3-month trial in a City of Manningham council lake to measure the impact of Biostim probiotics on algae and blue-green algae. Water samples were taken prior to Biostim being used. We then treated the lake with a standard dose of Biostim for 3 months. No other method of treatment was used, e.g. no aerators, chemicals or manual removal took place.

Natural Algae Attack Bundle

Want to get rid of your algae, but in a natural way? If you have patience to wait a few weeks, this is the ideal bundle to treat any type of algae.

This 100% natural Biostim duo includes Biostim Tablets and Biostim Accelerator. The introduction of Biostim Tablets into your dam starts the process of stimulating the natural growth of “good” bacteria. As these microbial populations grow, they consume nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus which algae depend on to survive, aka the “good” bacteria take the food from the algae, starving the algae out of the aquatic system. Biostim Accelerator is a biocatalyst, thrusting the above processes into turbo-charge.

Can’t wait 6-8 weeks to clear your algae? Try step 3.

If you’re in a hurry to clean up your algae, add Step 3. Remember though, you will still require Step 1 and 2 to stop the algae returning.

Step 3

Use AlgaeLift to peel algae from surfaces

Algae Lift is a peroxide-based water treatment that removes algae from aquatic surfaces (e.g. plants, rocks, submerged equipment) so natural processes can break the algae down faster. Not an algaecide itself, Algae Lift instead “lifts” algae from these surfaces, which allows “good” bacteria and other aquatic life to break down the algae. Being peroxide-based, Algae Lift naturally breaks down to hydrogen, oxygen and water so it doesn’t add nasty chemicals to your dam. This makes it 100% safe for fish, plants and other aquatic life when applied correctly.

See it in action

In extreme cases, take Step 4 to kill your algae immediately.

We typically don’t encourage use of algaecides because they kill everything in your dam (the “good” guys too). That said, if you must use an algaecide, we recommend you follow the instructions below.

Step 4

Algaecide (+ Biostim Accelerator)

If killing your algae immediately is your only option, we suggest you use an algaecide (our recommendation is Cupricide or Kupramine) in combination with Biostim Accelerator. Biostim Accelerator is a 100% natural biocatalyst which improves the effectiveness of algaecides, reducing how much algaecide you need to use which limits the damage done to your dam.

How Biostim Accelerator works

Remember, you must combine this step with Step 1 and 2 if you want to prevent algae from returning. If not, your algae is almost guaranteed to return and is likely to be even more invasive. The reason being, as mentioned above, is that algaecides kill off the “good” bacteria in your dam too, meaning there are less species competing with the algae for nutrients. This means next algae season there will be even more nutrients available for algae. The aim should be to kill [the algae] then replenish [the “good” bacteria].

I'm happy to take a look at your dam [on Google Maps] and provide FREE advice on the right type of aerator, motor size and placement. I can also answer any questions you have on improving water quality.

"Since WQS installed the aerator, we've not had a single algae problem. In our smaller ponds that are too small for aerators we used Biostim pellets on their own and have noticed a huge reduction in algae.”

Andy Hart

Horticultural Curator—Department of Environment, Water and Natural Resources, Adelaide

“We had a nutrient-rich stormwater lake that was having continuous problems with algae. We were previously treating the nutrients with a liquid solution that would just end up getting flushed away with the outgoing water. Scott recommended we switch to Biostim pellets which were exactly what we needed.”

Giles Pickard

Environment Project Officer, City of Subiaco

“Visiting ducks and our pet geese were continuously fouling the dam. WQS recommended a number of systems to improve the water quality. We are very happy with our final choice, the windmill aeration system. This combined with the Biostim pellets and liquid are cleaning up the dirty dam. Everything WQS said would happen has happened!”

Greg Lewis

Canterbury, Victoria

“We had an urgent problem—our old irrigation system had blockages from weeds. Our dam was also riddled with black sludge. Scott recommended both aeration and biologicals and within six weeks the dam became so clear I could see to the bottom of it for the first time in years! I was chuffed that we could fix the issue without the use of chemicals.”
