3 Month Trial: Improving Water Quality in a 6 Acre Lake with a Vertex Aerator

Background

We ran a 3 month trial in Dalton Lake to measure the impact of a Vertex aerator on water quality.

Dalton Lake is a 6+ acre lake located in Queensland that was suffering from a host of water quality issues (outlined below). The lake is in a semi-industrial area, surrounded by residential homes, commercial estate and heavily used motorways. Leon Rowlands from Switchback Consulting was contracted to improve the water quality. He got in contact with us for advice on an appropriate aerator for the lake.

What was wrong?

The problem

Water samples taken from various locations showed Dalton Lake was suffering from a multitude of water issues, including odour, algae, low oxygen, overabundance of nutrients etc.

The main cause of these issues was stratification of the waterbody with the bottom waters and top waters rarely mixing. This caused low dissolved oxygen and an overabundance of nutrients, particularly in the bottom waters. Odours and algal blooms were also a common occurrence, particularly following turnover events, i.e. when the stratified layers were mixed or flipped, often due to severe weather.

  • Toxic odours
  • Algal blooms
  • Stratification
  • Over concentration of nutrients
  • Low oxygen, particularly in bottom waters
What did we do?

The solution

In order to turn things around, the water needed to be destratified slowly by increasing dissolved oxygen levels throughout the water column. This required a key focus on bottom waters that had a lot less oxygen, and a lot higher nutrient levels, than the top waters.

We supplied a Vertex Large Lake Aerator system with 5 x quad disc air stations, and with the help of local contractors, our team installed the system.

How does sub-surface aeration work?

How did it go?

The results

Water samples were taken from two different locations in April 2023, prior to the aerator being installed, and again in July 2023, after the aerator had been running for 3 months. At both locations, bottom water and surface water samples were taken and sent to a lab for testing.

[Below] are the nutrient level results for bottom water samples taken 3 months after the Vertex aerator was installed.

99%

Ammonia reduction

95%

Phosphorus reduction

83%

Nitrogen reduction

Nutrient levels dropped enormously after 3 months, particularly in the bottom layer, because the water was more healthily mixed and oxygenated by the aerator.

Dissolved oxygen and temperature was also greatly increased across the full water column, bringing the bottom waters more in line with the surface waters. This eliminated stratification and the threat of turnover events, which can cause mass fish kills.

I'm happy to take a look at your dam [on Google Maps] and provide FREE advice on the right type of aerator, motor size and placement. I can also answer any questions you have on improving water quality.

"Since WQS installed the aerator, we've not had a single algae problem. In our smaller ponds that are too small for aerators we used Biostim pellets on their own and have noticed a huge reduction in algae.”

Andy Hart

Horticultural Curator—Department of Environment, Water and Natural Resources, Adelaide

“We had a nutrient-rich stormwater lake that was having continuous problems with algae. We were previously treating the nutrients with a liquid solution that would just end up getting flushed away with the outgoing water. Scott recommended we switch to Biostim pellets which were exactly what we needed.”

Giles Pickard

Environment Project Officer, City of Subiaco

“Visiting ducks and our pet geese were continuously fouling the dam. WQS recommended a number of systems to improve the water quality. We are very happy with our final choice, the windmill aeration system. This combined with the Biostim pellets and liquid are cleaning up the dirty dam. Everything WQS said would happen has happened!”

“We had an urgent problem—our old irrigation system had blockages from weeds. Our dam was also riddled with black sludge. Scott recommended both aeration and biologicals and within six weeks the dam became so clear I could see to the bottom of it for the first time in years! I was chuffed that we could fix the issue without the use of chemicals.”
