Fine Bubble VS Coarse Bubble Diffusion

Why is Fine Bubble Diffusion better than Coarse Bubble Diffusion?

When discussing sub-surface aeration systems, there can be a misconception that because course bubble diffused systems are efficient at mixing the water column that they must be efficient at improving oxygen levels in the water. Although their ability to mix the water is great, the oxygen they add to the water is minimal when compared to fine bubble diffused aeration and requires more energy to run.

Benefits of Fine Bubble Diffusion

  1. Aeration efficiency: Bubble size ultimately determines how much air is being added into the water column. Smaller bubbles have a greater surface area to hold oxygen and rise more slowly than larger bubbles making them nearly twice as efficient at delivering oxygen into the water.
  2. Fine bubble diffusers are easier to install and maintain: Course bubble diffusers commonly have to be anchored to the ground, meaning that the water has to be drained and the surface cleared from sludge prior to installation! Fine Bubble diffusers can be simply dropped into the water, and if a buoy is tied to the weighted base, can be easily pulled out and cleaned if necessary.
  3. Fine Bubble diffuser don’t get clogged as easily: Courser bubbles mean larger pores in the diffuser’s membrane, this leaves them more susceptible to being clogged. If the diffuser gets clogged, it could cause back-pressure issues leading to a damaged air compressor.

Why is it important to have oxygen in the water?

Just like we do, aquatic species as well as micro-organisms such as fish and beneficial bacteria require oxygen to flourish. Fish and aquatic species need oxygen to breathe and beneficial bacteria require it in the right quantities too since they’re aerobic, meaning they require oxygen. These bacterium are champions at actively consuming and processing nutrient inputs, such as duck poo, sludge and dead algae which helps prevent you from having more issues with aquatic weed and algae later on.

What are the best diffusers to use?

We have an extensive range of Fine-Bubble membrane diffused aeration systems to suit most budgets and applications, give us a call today on 1300 283 387 to discuss your application.
