DeSkuzzer 2.0—Remove Aquatic Weeds, Algae and Debris from the Surface of Dams, Lakes and Ponds

Summary

The DeSkuzzer 2.0 is a manual surface skimmer for dams, lakes, and ponds, effectively removing azolla, duckweed, filamentous algae, and debris. Its weighted bottom bar and floating top bar make it easy to use. It’s a low-cost, efficient treatment to use before considering chemical or biological treatments.

DeSkuzzer 2.0—Remove Aquatic Weeds, Algae and Debris from the Surface of Dams, Lakes and Ponds

We want to talk about a very useful tool for skimming off azolla, duckweed, string algae, leaf debris, and really, anything that’s floating in a large pond or a dam. It’s called the DeSkuzzer 2.0, and it’s a really useful piece of equipment.

The Problem… and Solution

If you have a dam, lake, or pond, one of the big problems you’ll face is surface pests like azolla, duckweed, string algae, leaf debris, and all sorts of floating muck. These can ruin the aesthetic appeal of your water, but they can come with nastier problems, too.

Sometimes, you can’t use herbicides and chemical treatments. Sometimes, you just don’t want to. Sometimes, they’re too expensive. Whatever the reason, you still need to get rid of your weeds, algae, and debris. Even if you can or want to use biological or chemical treatments, we always recommend manual treatments as a first line of attack.

That’s where we’d use the DeSkuzzer 2.0.

What is DeSkuzzer 2.0?

The DeSkuzzer is the fastest and most effective tool we know of for manually clearing floating aquatic weeds, filamentous algae, and organic debris from the surface of your dam, lake, or pond. It’s pretty simple in design — it’s a kind of net that looks like a parachute. You throw it out onto the lake and pull it back in using the attached top bar.

You can find similar products on the market, but we believe the DeSkuzzer is a superior design. With the other products, the top bar pushes debris off to the side, so you don’t get as much of the debris moving with the net.

On the DeSkuzzer, the bottom bar is weighted, and there are floats on either side that keep the upper bar suspended above the water column. When you pull it in, the weed goes with it instead of being pushed to the sides. It’s a small, valuable difference compared with competitors: you get more in per scoop, so your job is quicker and easier.

How to Use the DeSkuzzer

The DeSkuzzer is easy to use. It’s a really simple piece of equipment. It’s like a net, and it comes with a rope pre-tied to it. You just slip your hand through and throw the unit out onto the water. Make sure you grab the top end of the bar, throw it outl, and it will land in the pond.

Then you just slowly pull it in. Don’t pull it in too quickly because if you do, the scum will get pushed off to the side. But when you pull it in slowly, it brings a lot of debris with it that you can just pull onto the share. You can also use it like this from a boat. Job done.

You can also put it on the front of a boat. To do it, you want to drive slowly, but what you can do is then just loop the rope onto a fishhook-type pole or any sort of telescopic pole, get it out in front of a boat, and then just push it around slowly.

Why You Should Use It

The DeSkuzzer 2.0 is a relatively low-cost, very good maintenance tool for pulling in azolla,  duckweed, or filamentous algae. It’s a great first line of defence: we always recommend trying to mechanically remove as much as you can first before you go in with a herbicide spray.

And if you’re looking to avoid herbicides and similar treatments entirely, this should be your go-to. You get fast, physical removal of floating weeds, it works wherever you need it to, and it’s low-cost and low-maintenance.

"Since WQS installed the aerator, we've not had a single algae problem. In our smaller ponds that are too small for aerators we used Biostim pellets on their own and have noticed a huge reduction in algae.”

Andy Hart

Horticultural Curator—Department of Environment, Water and Natural Resources, Adelaide

“We had a nutrient-rich stormwater lake that was having continuous problems with algae. We were previously treating the nutrients with a liquid solution that would just end up getting flushed away with the outgoing water. Scott recommended we switch to Biostim pellets which were exactly what we needed.”

Giles Pickard

Environment Project Officer, City of Subiaco

“Visiting ducks and our pet geese were continuously fouling the dam. WQS recommended a number of systems to improve the water quality. We are very happy with our final choice, the windmill aeration system. This combined with the Biostim pellets and liquid are cleaning up the dirty dam. Everything WQS said would happen has happened!”

“We had an urgent problem—our old irrigation system had blockages from weeds. Our dam was also riddled with black sludge. Scott recommended both aeration and biologicals and within six weeks the dam became so clear I could see to the bottom of it for the first time in years! I was chuffed that we could fix the issue without the use of chemicals.”
