PhosFix: Tackle Phosphate and Stop Algal Growth

Summary

PhosFix is a safe mineral and bacteria treatment that binds phosphorus in water and sediment, reducing its availability to algae and weeds. It works best alongside aeration and other biological treatments. Safe for use in irrigation and livestock drinking dams, it’s an effective solution for phosphate-driven algal growth.

PhosFix: Tackle Phosphate and Stop Algal Growth

Managing weeds and algal blooms is a big part of water management, especially when you’re dealing with excess nutrients coming in from external sources. Phosphate is a major challenge, so it’s important to tackle it whenever you can.

That’s why we want to talk to you about PhosFix. It’s a powerful treatment that helps you get back on track.

The Problem With Phosphate

One of the big signs of excess phosphate is excessive weed and algal growth. Phosphate is the primary driver of algal blooms. If you’ve got phosphorus coming into the water through things like recycled water, animal waste, runoff coming in from fertilised paddocks, or other sources, you probably have a phosphate problem.

The main issue with phosphate is that it provides massive amounts of nutrients for algal growth. Usually, weeds and algae are limited by the nutrients available in the water. When you have excess nutrients flowing in, you get algal blooms.

When that happens, you need to reset your dam’s phosphate levels, or you’ll keep running into issues. One way to do that is by using PhosFix.

What is PhosFix?

PhosFix is a blend of minerals and natural bacteria designed to remove phosphorus from the water column. You spray it out over your dam, and as it falls down through the water column, it binds phosphorus that’s suspended in the water.

If you dose it high enough, when it falls down to the bottom, it’ll also bind and lock up all the phosphorus that’s in the sediment as well. It’s very effective at reducing the availability of phosphate used by weeds and algae to grow.

When you use PhosFix, the long-term benefit is that any new phosphorus coming into the water takes time to build up enough that it can be used by algae for growth again. The more PhosFix you use, the more phosphate it can bind. It’s a great treatment because there’s no withholding period for irrigation, meaning you can use the water immediately after treatment.

As Part of a Combined Strategy

PhosFix is a very good product when used in combination with aeration and biologicals. It doesn’t remove the need for biological treatments; it’s an additional tool you can use to improve water quality. You still want to use the other Biostim products, for example, as those also work on nitrogen and nitrogen cycle issues, which are another key factor in algae and weed growth. They also reduce the sludge layer at the bottom of the dam, which is like a fertiliser for weeds and algae.

And aeration should always be part of water quality management strategies. PhosFix doesn’t change that — you still need aeration to improve oxygenation and boost aerobic bacteria performance in your water.

But it’s a key part of the strategy, and when you use multiple tools properly, you can get astonishing results.

Natural, Practical, and Effective

If you’re having problems with algae, weeds, and phosphorus, PhosFix is a great product to use. It’s based on natural minerals and bacteria.

From PhosFix, you get a safe and effective product that does exactly what it claims to do.

"Since WQS installed the aerator, we've not had a single algae problem. In our smaller ponds that are too small for aerators we used Biostim pellets on their own and have noticed a huge reduction in algae.”

Andy Hart

Horticultural Curator—Department of Environment, Water and Natural Resources, Adelaide

“We had a nutrient-rich stormwater lake that was having continuous problems with algae. We were previously treating the nutrients with a liquid solution that would just end up getting flushed away with the outgoing water. Scott recommended we switch to Biostim pellets which were exactly what we needed.”

Giles Pickard

Environment Project Officer, City of Subiaco

“Visiting ducks and our pet geese were continuously fouling the dam. WQS recommended a number of systems to improve the water quality. We are very happy with our final choice, the windmill aeration system. This combined with the Biostim pellets and liquid are cleaning up the dirty dam. Everything WQS said would happen has happened!”

“We had an urgent problem—our old irrigation system had blockages from weeds. Our dam was also riddled with black sludge. Scott recommended both aeration and biologicals and within six weeks the dam became so clear I could see to the bottom of it for the first time in years! I was chuffed that we could fix the issue without the use of chemicals.”
