The Hakko Aerator: A Simple, Low-Cost Solution for Shallow Dams

Summary

The Hakko aerator is an efficient, low-cost subsurface aeration solution for small, shallow dams. Aeration improves water quality by supporting good bacteria and encouraging good circulation, it reduces algae, sludge, and stratification. The Hakko is discreet, energy-efficient, reliable, and ideal for natural ponds, livestock dams, and swimming areas.

The Hakko Aerator: A Simple, Low-Cost Solution for Shallow Dams

Aeration is the number-one tool for improving water quality in ponds, dams, and lakes. The trouble is that there are lots of options with different capabilities. Choosing the best one depends on your specific site — size, depth, water quality, and power accessibility.

If you’ve got a small, shallow dam, subsurface aeration systems are the perfect option — the Hakko Aerator is one of my favourite choices. They’re one of the most efficient and affordable ways to keep your water clean, clear, and healthy.

Aeration Matters

Aeration is a powerful tool for water quality management. Poorly oxygenated water allows bad bacteria to thrive, causing all sorts of issues like sludge buildup, algal blooms and weed growth, and poor water quality.

When you properly aerate your water, you get the opposite — you create the perfect conditions for good bacteria to thrive instead. Good bacteria breaks down nutrients and materials in the water, preventing algae and weeds from using them to grow, and helps stop stratification in your dam or lake.

Aerators come in all shapes and sizes, and for a small, shallow dam, some types are better than others. That’s why we like the Hakko — it’s ideal for these exact water bodies.

Designed for Shallow Water

Subsurface aeration systems are ideal for dams where you don’t need a fountain or don’t want a big surface display — perfect for when you want your dam to stay natural and discreet. The Hakko Aerator is a standout choice.

In subsurface aeration, air gets pumped from a shore-based compressor to a diffuser at the bottom of the water. With the Hakko, the diffuser sits at the bottom of the dam and releases bubbles that rise through the water, minimising any displays while still ensuring evenly distributed oxygenation.

They’re great choices for these kinds of water bodies:

– Shallow dams (2 metres or less)

– Swimming areas where you don’t want electrical equipment in the water

– Livestock dams where animals regularly enter the water

– Natural-looking ponds where you prefer no visual changes

Quality and Performance You Can Trust

The Hakko Aerator is a piece of quality, Taiwanese engineering from a country known for its high-quality aeration equipment. This is equipment you can rely on.

We stock air pump sizes from 25 litres to 200 litres per minute — that’s enough to do a decent-sized dam of around half an acre quite comfortably.

Affordable and Energy-Efficient

One of the biggest advantages of the Hakko is its cost — upfront and ongoing. Since they’re designed for shallow water, they don’t need a high-powered air pump for good results. Since you’re pumping low-volume air in shallow water, you don’t need something with a hell of a lot of power behind it. That means you’re not paying a lot of ongoing electricity costs.

We also see that the upfront cost is less than the type of systems we need in deeper dams, or for fountain-type aerators.

A Smart Choice for Small Dams

For small or shallow dams, you don’t need to overcomplicate things. The Hakko is a reliable, well-sized aeration system that gives you all the aeration you need without breaking the bank. If you’re looking for a good aeration system and don’t want to deal with heavy power demands and overly complicated systems, the Hakko Aerator is absolutely worth a go.

"Since WQS installed the aerator, we've not had a single algae problem. In our smaller ponds that are too small for aerators we used Biostim pellets on their own and have noticed a huge reduction in algae.”

“We had a nutrient-rich stormwater lake that was having continuous problems with algae. We were previously treating the nutrients with a liquid solution that would just end up getting flushed away with the outgoing water. Scott recommended we switch to Biostim pellets which were exactly what we needed.”

Giles Pickard

Environment Project Officer, City of Subiaco

“Visiting ducks and our pet geese were continuously fouling the dam. WQS recommended a number of systems to improve the water quality. We are very happy with our final choice, the windmill aeration system. This combined with the Biostim pellets and liquid are cleaning up the dirty dam. Everything WQS said would happen has happened!”

“We had an urgent problem—our old irrigation system had blockages from weeds. Our dam was also riddled with black sludge. Scott recommended both aeration and biologicals and within six weeks the dam became so clear I could see to the bottom of it for the first time in years! I was chuffed that we could fix the issue without the use of chemicals.”
