The Vertex Aeration System: For Large, Deep Water Bodies

Summary

The Vertex Aeration System provides efficient subsurface aeration for deep dams and ponds, improving water quality by promoting aerobic bacteria and destratifying water. It keeps electricity onshore, is discreet, quiet, low-power, and suitable for remote installations. Reliable and durable, it offers consistent year-round aeration without visual disruption or high costs.

The Vertex Aeration System: For Large, Deep Water Bodies

Aeration is the number one tool for ensuring high-quality water and long-term water health. Poorly oxygenated water makes an excellent home for anaerobic bacteria, the “bad” bacteria that can help algae and other pond weeds take hold of your nice, clean water.

Aeration changes this and creates the conditions for the aerobic, “good” bacteria to thrive instead. We want to introduce you to the Vertex Aeration System. We love these aerators — Vertex is just a sensational company.

The Vertex Aeration System

We’ve worked with Vertex since around 2009, and we believe they make the best subsurface aeration system that money can buy. They’re ideal for anyone looking to improve water quality in deeper dams and ponds.

How the Vertex Aeration System Works

Your ideal dam for this system is going to be from around 1.5 metres up to 12 metres. You have an on-shore air pump, and you inject air into the bottom of the dam. Millions of little bubbles rise up to the surface, and they drag oxygen-poor water up from the bottom of the dam to the surface.

This circulation distributes water evenly throughout the whole water body, helping to destratify the water and keep it fresh and healthy.

Ideal for Swimming and Aesthetic Dams

One of the biggest advantages of the Vertex system is that there’s no electricity in the water. The pump stays safely on shore, so it’s good for swimming dams or any site where safety is a concern.

They’re low power consumption compared to a surface aerator because they pump air instead of water. And from an aesthetic perspective, the Vertex system is discreet and natural-looking: they use a self-weighted hose that sinks to the bottom, so there’s nothing at all that floats on the surface of the dam.

The only visible sign of activity is a gentle “boil” of bubbles at the surface that looks similar to a natural spring. There are no fountains or splashing water — so if you want to maintain the natural or decorative look of your dam, this is a great choice.

Quiet and Flexible Installation Options

The Vertex system isn’t particularly noisy — although you wouldn’t put one underneath your bedroom window — but there’s an optional sound kit you can use to reduce the noise level. If your dam or waterbody is near living areas, this is a handy option to make it a little less obtrusive.

If your power source is located far away from your dam, you can easily set up a remote system. The air pump stays near your power supply, even hundreds of meters away, and a 1-inch airline runs through a shallow trench to the dam. It connects to a manifold from there, and then to the self-weighted air hoses in the water.

This flexibility means you can enjoy the benefits of aeration even if you’re in a remote or off-grid location.

A Great Alternative to Solar or Wind Aeration

If you’ve looked into solar or wind-powered aerators and found them too expensive, or if you just want reliable, 24/7 aeration, the Vertex system is a fantastic option. It’s reliable, efficient, and built for long-term use.

The Vertex system provides consistent, year-round results for anyone dealing with poor water quality, oxygen imbalances, or sludge build-up… without the expense or complexity of alternative systems.

Why We Recommend Vertex

The Vertex Aeration System stands out because of its exceptional engineering, reliability, and performance. It’s quiet, efficient, and beautifully made — the kind of equipment you run smoothly in the background as it keeps your dam healthy and balanced.

The Vertex system is exceptional: it’s a great quality unit, works 24/7, and that’s what we love most about it.

"Since WQS installed the aerator, we've not had a single algae problem. In our smaller ponds that are too small for aerators we used Biostim pellets on their own and have noticed a huge reduction in algae.”

Andy Hart

Horticultural Curator—Department of Environment, Water and Natural Resources, Adelaide

“We had a nutrient-rich stormwater lake that was having continuous problems with algae. We were previously treating the nutrients with a liquid solution that would just end up getting flushed away with the outgoing water. Scott recommended we switch to Biostim pellets which were exactly what we needed.”

Giles Pickard

Environment Project Officer, City of Subiaco

“Visiting ducks and our pet geese were continuously fouling the dam. WQS recommended a number of systems to improve the water quality. We are very happy with our final choice, the windmill aeration system. This combined with the Biostim pellets and liquid are cleaning up the dirty dam. Everything WQS said would happen has happened!”

“We had an urgent problem—our old irrigation system had blockages from weeds. Our dam was also riddled with black sludge. Scott recommended both aeration and biologicals and within six weeks the dam became so clear I could see to the bottom of it for the first time in years! I was chuffed that we could fix the issue without the use of chemicals.”
