Which Biostim Product is Right for You?

Summary

Biostim products improve pond and dam health by stimulating beneficial bacteria and reducing sludge, nutrients, and organic matter. Biostim Liquid targets floating debris, Powder treats large or polluted systems cost-effectively, and Pellets/Tablets tackle bottom sludge. Each supports cleaner water, fewer weeds, and reduced chemical output.

Which Biostim Product is Right for You?

Keeping a dam or pond healthy is about choosing the right solutions, whether that’s aeration or biological treatments. Biostim treatments are an effective way to help deliver good water quality, clearer water, and healthier ecosystems.

But it can be hard to choose which product to use. We want to give you a little helping hand as to which product you should use for which situation.

Why Use Biostim?

Biostim is an effective biological treatment for helping clear dams, ponds, and lakes of nasty sludge, suspended particles, and other problems, like algae and weeds. It’s a biological stimulant that helps the good bacteria your water bodies rely on to thrive.

There are a few kinds of Biostim products, and they’re all good at different jobs. There are three kinds I want to talk to you about:

Biostim Liquid

Biostim Powder

Biostim Pellets or Tablets

We’re going to walk you through when you’d use each kind. We’ll start with the Biostim Liquid.

Biostim Liquid — For Floating Organic Material

Biostim Liquid is targeted at organic material that floats around in the dam. If you’ve had a lot of rain and the crops have been washed in, but the water hasn’t really settled — if there’s a flaky organic material floating around — Biostim Liquid is a really good product for that.

It acts as a biological flocculant — it will make these organic particles stick together and sink. It’s really good for stimulating bacteria in the water column: they go around like little Pac Men and munch away on all the stuff that’s in the water. And it’s especially effective after you’ve used an aquatic algaecide or herbicide treatment, where you end up with dead, decaying material floating around for weeks after.

Biostim Liquid is probably the lowest grade in terms of biological products, so it’s relatively low strength, but still very effective.

Use Biostim Liquid when:

– Suspended solids are clouding the water

– After aquatic algaecide or herbicide treatments, where dead algae is breaking down

– You want a lower-strength biological treatment

Biostim Powder — High Concentrations for Big Jobs

Biostim Powder is the highest grade in terms of product concentration — it’s a strong product that’s really good in nasty water situations like wastewater applications. It’s easy to use: it comes in a satchel you can simply toss in at various spots around the dam.

It’s the most cost-effective way of treating large water bodies. It helps degrade nutrients in the system, and it gets down in the sludge and starts munching away. The stimulants in Biostim Powder encourage good bacteria to get to work, making it a heavy-hitter perfect for larger setups.

Use Biostim Powder when:

– You want to treat a large area

– You want a cost-effective solution

– You want a high-strength treatment

Biostim Pellets & Biostim Tablets — Targeting Sludge on the Bottom

Biostim Pellets or Tablets are very similar products — the tablets are a newer generation from the pellets. Tablets are a bit more expensive than pellets, but they’re more intensive and some people find them better value. But they do the same thing and work in the same way, and both are very good products..

You can just chuck them into the water. But where they work really well is when you want to treat localised areas, like around a jetty or underneath an irrigation suction line.

Pellets are great for irrigation dams, since even though water doesn’t stay in your dam for very long, the pellets do. Pellets don’t get sucked out through the irrigation like powders and liquids: they sink straight down to the bottom, and that’s where they work.

At the bottom of the dam is where the sludge layers build up, and it becomes the primary nutrient source for algae and weeds. With tablets and pellets, you’re stimulating the good bacteria at the bottom and over time, you’re reducing the nutrient load in the water column and in the sludge. You eventually end up with less algae and aquatic weeds.

Use Biostim Pellets or Tablets when:

– You want to treat locally

– Have an irrigation dam with lots of water movement and flow

– Want to avoid biofilm inside pipes and sprinklers

– Want to target sludge

The Big Picture

Sludge is a big problem. It’s a trigger for algal blooms and nuisance weeds, causing ongoing maintenance headaches. Biostim products help reduce the nutrient load in the water itself and in the sludge where nutrients are stored.

You can enjoy cleaner water, healthier ecosystems, and fewer costly chemical treatments over the long term.

"Since WQS installed the aerator, we've not had a single algae problem. In our smaller ponds that are too small for aerators we used Biostim pellets on their own and have noticed a huge reduction in algae.”

Andy Hart

Horticultural Curator—Department of Environment, Water and Natural Resources, Adelaide

“We had a nutrient-rich stormwater lake that was having continuous problems with algae. We were previously treating the nutrients with a liquid solution that would just end up getting flushed away with the outgoing water. Scott recommended we switch to Biostim pellets which were exactly what we needed.”

Giles Pickard

Environment Project Officer, City of Subiaco

“Visiting ducks and our pet geese were continuously fouling the dam. WQS recommended a number of systems to improve the water quality. We are very happy with our final choice, the windmill aeration system. This combined with the Biostim pellets and liquid are cleaning up the dirty dam. Everything WQS said would happen has happened!”

Greg Lewis

Canterbury, Victoria

“We had an urgent problem—our old irrigation system had blockages from weeds. Our dam was also riddled with black sludge. Scott recommended both aeration and biologicals and within six weeks the dam became so clear I could see to the bottom of it for the first time in years! I was chuffed that we could fix the issue without the use of chemicals.”
