What is EPDM Dam Liner? The Solution to Your Lining Problems

Dam liner is a crucial piece of kit for any dam owner. Fundamentally, it protects your pond and prevents water loss. Above all else, it ensures that you have an aquatic paradise to enjoy for years to come.

What is EPDM Liner?

EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer) is a tough synthetic rubber. It works amazingly as a pond liner because you can use it for:

  • Lakes
  • Garden ponds
  • Swimming ponds
  • Man-made streams
  • Farm dams

It’s pretty similar to other rubbers, like butyl (but I’ll cover that in more detail later). Its properties include its smooth, tough surface that doesn’t bubble or ridge, resulting in a good, even coverage. Plus, it won’t fade or lose quality, even under the Aussie sun.

Why Choose EPDM Dam Liner?

So, what are the major benefits of this type of liner? There are some key attributes that make it amazingly versatile and hardy.

  • Highly flexible: EPDM moulds readily into the contours of your pit, which means you can design a dam that suits you and still get a smooth result. It actually has up to 300% stretch!
  • Versatile: It’s suitable for a variety of ponds no matter the size or shape. We sell EPDM liner as full rolls or cut to size.
  • Puncture resistant: Compared to PVC or butyl, it’s less likely to puncture or rip.
  • UV-resistant: Not only is EPDM resistant to UV rays, but it’s also resistant to ozone and can even withstand wide temperatures from -40˚ to 90˚C.
  • Non-toxic: It won’t leach chemicals into the water, meaning it’s safe for fish, wildlife, and aquatic plants.
  • Microbe-resistant: EPDM is also resistant to microbial and algae attacks, making it easy to maintain after installation.
  • Superior weathering: Even as it ages, EPDM liner won’t crack or go brittle. In fact, if you install it over a geotextile underlay, it could even last a lifetime.

Uses for EPDM Liner

This liner is the ideal choice for many reasons. But it’s not exclusively for ponds and dams. In fact, if you Google “EPDM”, you’ll get a lot of results for roofing, and that’s because this membrane has many, many uses.

You can get it in several thicknesses, but the thicker the better if you want to prevent punctures. We have many thicknesses to choose from if you have time to spare, as we can order custom sizes from our manufacturer. We stock 1mm smooth liner locally in our warehouse too, which is suitable for 90% of applications.

No matter the use, we recommend adding an underlay, then getting an EPDM liner in a sheet at your required size. The stretch and flexibility means you can mold it perfectly to your pond, ensuring the perfect fit; meanwhile, the underlay protects the liner from any roots or rocks to add an extra layer of protection.

Depending on your design plans, you can cover the top of the liner with gravel, rocks or pebble to make it look more natural. Again, EPDM liner is great here because it has such a natural look once the dam is filled with water.

With this amazing level of flexibility, you can create a dam that matches your vision. Add fish, water features like fountains, and even inflatables for fun. Use your dam for whatever you want, safe in the knowledge that your liner will protect it.
