Why are aerators so expensive?

If you are new to the field of aeration, the cost of an aerator may surprise you. They can be pricier than most people expect. If you start to shop around, however, you’ll see it’s not just our aerators that cost a lot, it’s all aerators. Well, the ones that work anyway. In fact, our range is a lot lower-priced than competitors when comparing similar quality models. Still, they do come with a substantial price tag. So why do aerators cost so much? Well, here are three big considerations.

1. Rebuilding an entire aquatic ecosystem is a big (massive) ask

We must get real about what we’re actually doing when we’re improving a dam using aeration—we’re rebuilding an entire aquatic ecosystem from the ground up. Without adequate aeration a dam gets stagnant and often overrun with weeds, algae and sludge, wildlife struggles to survive and odour issues are common. This is because your waterbody is essentially dead. To bring it back to life is a big ask. It means getting enough oxygen into your entire waterbody to support all levels of life from aerobic bacteria and planktonic organisms to insects, fish, birds etc. This is no small task. In fact, when you really start to consider just how much of a transformation adequate aeration can have on your dam’s entire ecosystem, it’s a small price to pay.

2. We only stock equipment that does the job

For over a decade we’ve tested dozens of aerators from all over the world, including the USA, Germany, Taiwan, even China (although these failed our tests). The aerator range we’ve settled on is the best-of-the-best in terms of quality, value for money and effectiveness at aerating large bodies of water. The fact is, if you shop around, you’ll see there are many “aerators” on the market (especially from China) that claim to be capable of aerating large bodies of water when they simply aren’t. Trust us, we’ve tested a lot of them. The aerators we stock do the job you want them to do, that’s why they cost what they cost. And because we’ve put every one of them to the test for years on end, we personally stand behind the performance of every model we sell.

3. To prevent you paying twice

Have you ever bought the cheap version of something first only to replace it with the quality version pretty much immediately? Meaning you paid twice. The first chainsaw I ever bought was from ALDI. It was $150. I thought I’d stumbled on a deal. That was until I moved rural and immediately met the limitations of the machine. Within a year, I had forked out over $1,000 for a Stihl chainsaw—almost 10 times the cost of the ALDI saw. The reason I could justify spending so much more on the Stihl chainsaw was because I knew the likelihood of ever needing to replace it was slim to none. Only now do I reflect back on the fact that if I had bought the Stihl chainsaw first, I would have saved myself $150. The point of the story is obvious: you get what you pay for. The fact is, referring back to point (1) and (2), if you’re genuinely interested in sufficiently aerating your dam, there are no cheap shortcuts. In fact, if you do try a cheap alternative first, you’ll likely pay more because when it doesn’t work you’ll be forced to pay again.
