How Biostim PhosFix works

Biostim PhosFix works by binding with free-floating phosphorus in the water column, forming stable and insoluble compounds that sink to the bottom. This prevents algae from accessing this essential nutrient, which reduces the likelihood of algal blooms and improves overall water quality.

Flocculation and Sedimentation: Biostim PhosFix aggregates phosphorus particles and other suspended solids, creating larger clusters that quickly settle to the pond or lake bottom.

Phosphorus Sequestration: Once settled, the bound phosphorus remains locked within the sediment, significantly decreasing its bioavailability.

Immediate and Long-Term Effects: Unlike some treatments that require multiple applications to see results, Biostim PhosFix delivers fast first-time results and long-lasting phosphorus control.

Application and Dosage

Note: the following dose rates are guidelines that may need to be increased or decreased according to your individual conditions. Phosphorus testing of water and sediment is recommended for more precise dose rates.

Biostim PhosFix is safe for use in waterbodies used by people, animals and plants. Even overdosing your water will not impact the environment. When correct sediment dose rates have been applied successfully, repeat doses of PhosFix are not required and treatment can last >12 months. Repeat applications are only necessary once new phosphorus laden material has settled on top of the capping layer.

Dosage Instructions

The below dosages are per surface acre:

Water: Light dose 25L / Heavy dose 50L.

Sediment: Light dose 100L / Heavy dose 300L.

Application Instructions

Using Biostim PhosFix is simple; the goal is to spray the required amount over the entire surface of the water body. You may be able to do this without diluting the PhosFix solution, or you may want to dilute PhosFix with rain/dam water so you have enough solution to cover the entire surface.

Biostim PhosFix begins binding phosphorus and clarifying water within hours.

Breaks down organics and binds phosphorus in the water column

Biostim PhosFix works by combining beneficial bacteria with a proprietary blend of minerals that actively break down organic matter in the water while simultaneously binding free-floating phosphorus. This dual-action approach significantly reduces nutrient availability—particularly phosphorus, which is a primary driver of algal blooms and water quality degradation. By targeting both organics and nutrients at the source, Biostim PhosFix helps restore a more balanced and resilient aquatic ecosystem.

Improves water quality and clarity within hours

Thanks to its fast-acting formulation, Biostim PhosFix begins improving water clarity and overall quality within just hours of application. As the product reduces organic turbidity and binds excess phosphorus, suspended solids begin to settle and the water becomes visibly clearer. This rapid response makes it an excellent solution for ponds, lakes, and dams requiring quick aesthetic or functional improvements, such as those in public parks, golf courses, or residential developments.

Does not impact water pH or alkalinity

Biostim PhosFix is engineered to be pH-neutral and to have no effect on the natural alkalinity of the water. This is essential for maintaining a stable aquatic environment, as fluctuations in pH or buffering capacity can stress aquatic organisms and disrupt ecosystem balance. By preserving these key chemical parameters, Biostim PhosFix integrates seamlessly into ongoing water quality management programs.

Eliminates internal phosphorus recycling from the sediment

Biostim PhosFix not only treats phosphorus in the water column but also prevents internal phosphorus loading from sediments. In many water bodies, phosphorus trapped in the sediment is periodically released back into the water, sustaining cycles of algal growth. Biostim PhosFix binds phosphorus at the sediment-water interface, locking it away and making it unavailable for future biological uptake. This long-term effect is crucial for breaking the nutrient cycle and supporting sustainable water management.

Safe and easy liquid formulation with no irrigation restrictions

The liquid formulation of Biostim PhosFix ensures quick and even distribution throughout the water body and requires no special handling or equipment. Its safety profile means it can be applied in diverse settings without posing risks to aquatic life, people, or livestock. Additionally, there are no irrigation restrictions, making it ideal for use in ponds and reservoirs that supply water for agricultural or landscape irrigation.

Maintains desired turbidity, TSS, and Secchi

Regular use of Biostim PhosFix supports the maintenance of optimal turbidity levels, total suspended solids (TSS), and Secchi depth—three crucial indicators of water clarity and health. By reducing organic matter and preventing nutrient-driven algal blooms, the product helps keep water bodies looking clean and functioning properly. These improvements benefit not only visual aesthetics but also light penetration, oxygen levels, and overall aquatic ecosystem performance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Biostim PhosFix binds free phosphorus in the water column, converting it into stable, insoluble compounds that make it unavailable for algae and weeds. It causes flocculation (clumping) of suspended particles, so they settle out and clear the water. It also supports beneficial microbes that degrade organic material, further improving water quality.

We recommend using Biostim PhosFix when you need to reduce phosphorus loads, clarify turbid water, or break the nutrient cycle driving algal blooms or aquatic weed outbreaks.

Yes, Biostim PhosFix is safe for aquatic life, wildlife, livestock drinking, plants, and swimmers.

No, Biostim PhosFix is formulated to not impact pH and does not alter water alkalinity, helping maintain a stable aquatic environment.

Dosing Biostim PhosFix depends on whether you're treating water column or sediment:

  • Water column (light load): ~ 25 L per surface acre
  • Water column (heavy load): ~ 50 L per surface acre
  • Sediment (light): ~ 100 L per surface acre
  • Sediment (heavy): ~ 300 L per surface acre

These are guidelines only; accurate rates depend on phosphorus levels and conditions. Contact us for FREE dosage advice.

Apply Biostim PhosFix by spraying the solution evenly over the water surface. You can use it undiluted or diluted with dam or rainwater to get enough volume to cover the area. It begins binding and clarifying immediately.

Once the correct dose (especially sediment dose) has been applied, Biostim PhosFix often does not require repeat application for 12 months. However, this depends on the nutrient-load and how much new phosphorus enters the water post treatment. Monitor your water health and if you need FREE advice, contact us here.

Biostim PhosFix helps break the nutrient cycle by immobilising phosphorus and reducing organic turbidity. But new phosphorus inputs (runoff, sediment disturbance, fertiliser, etc.) can reintroduce nutrients. Good catchment management and regular monitoring help maintain results.

Yes, overdosing is environmentally safe and won’t damage aquatic life. The extra material simply settles, and any extra product that falls down through the water column without binding to phosphorus will then bind the phosphorus that's in the sediment. That said, if overdosing in fishponds, ensure you have adequate aeration as the increased microbial activity will consume oxygen.

  • More even distribution (spraying over full surface)
  • Calm water, minimal disturbance
  • Accurate dosing based on phosphorus testing
  • Lower amounts of incoming nutrient inputs

No, you don’t have to, although if you do know the phosphorus levels, it's easier to dose correctly. If you need advice determining the optimal dose for your water body, contact us here.

Yes, however, we recommend waiting a couple of days after treating with chemicals before adding Biostim PhosFix so the chemicals don’t kill the “good” bacteria introduced. If using chemicals, we recommend you use Biostim Accelerator, a biocatalyst, at the same time to reduce how much chemical you need to use, and then you wait a couple of days before applying Biostim PhosFix.

Store the product in a cool, dry place, out of direct sunlight. Do not freeze. When stored correctly, Biostim PhosFix remains usable for up to 2 years after opening, although it won’t be as effective as fresher product.

"Since WQS installed the aerator, we've not had a single algae problem. In our smaller ponds that are too small for aerators we used Biostim pellets on their own and have noticed a huge reduction in algae.”

Andy Hart

Horticultural Curator—Department of Environment, Water and Natural Resources, Adelaide

“We had a nutrient-rich stormwater lake that was having continuous problems with algae. We were previously treating the nutrients with a liquid solution that would just end up getting flushed away with the outgoing water. Scott recommended we switch to Biostim pellets which were exactly what we needed.”

Giles Pickard

Environment Project Officer, City of Subiaco

“Visiting ducks and our pet geese were continuously fouling the dam. WQS recommended a number of systems to improve the water quality. We are very happy with our final choice, the windmill aeration system. This combined with the Biostim pellets and liquid are cleaning up the dirty dam. Everything WQS said would happen has happened!”

Greg Lewis

Canterbury, Victoria

“We had an urgent problem—our old irrigation system had blockages from weeds. Our dam was also riddled with black sludge. Scott recommended both aeration and biologicals and within six weeks the dam became so clear I could see to the bottom of it for the first time in years! I was chuffed that we could fix the issue without the use of chemicals.”
