The calculation is different depending on whether you are lining a dam or a pond.
Measuring liner for a dam
You never want to measure or purchase liner for a dam until the site has been fully excavated. Excavation is not a perfect art; what a dam looks like on a map will never fully align to what it is in reality. So, dig the hole first.

Then, like the image (above), lay string or a tape measure down on the ground to get accurate measurements of the width and length. Be sure to measure the longest and widest sections of the excavation and include 0.5-1m of overhang on all sides. This overhang will be secured in place by a perimeter anchor trench, i.e., you’ll bury a decent amount of it in a trench to hide and secure it.
Measuring liner for a pond
To calculate the length and width of liner for a pond, follow the diagram below. It shows how to take overhang and the vertical runs into consideration.

Example
If you had a pond 1m deep, 4.7m long and 3.2m wide.
Which liner should I choose?
We highly recommend EPDM liners. EPDM stands for Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer, a synthetic rubber that is highly flexible and highly durable.
Benefits of EPDM Liners
Extreme weather resistant
EPDM liners offer the highest level of resistance to extreme UV exposure and temperatures, oxidation and frost. Designed to stand the test of time, the liner remains durable even after decades of exposure to our harsh Aussie sun. It also remains strong and good-looking (not faded) even when exposed to extreme temperatures well below 0°C and well above 50°C.
Super flexible
EPDM liners offer unrivalled flexibility while remaining strong and durable. The elasticity of the rubber is retained even at temperatures well below 0°C. This means you can easily stretch the membrane to support all shapes and sizes of pond in all types of environments. You can even pull the whole thing up after years of use and use in another pond. Something not possible with plastic.
Natural look
EPDM liner presents a seamless, natural look in your waterbody. Unlike cheaper plastic liners that fill with air pockets, have unsightly ridges and fade over time, the rubber-made material delivers a smooth, mat-finish look that doesn’t change, even after years in the sun. EPDM liner looks great in the wild and doesn’t detract from the natural surroundings.
Safe for humans, fish, and the environment
EPDM liners are safe for humans, fish and plants because they don’t leach nasty chemicals into the water or surrounding environment (this is not the case with plastic liners). This makes EPDM liners ideal for swimming holes and fishponds.
20 year guarantee
Proving to stand the test of time, brands like Rollgum provide EPDM liner backed by a 20 year guarantee.
